Teflon politico Jacob Zuma bounces back from corruption scandals to win
election, but which of his wives will be First Lady?

Several people have asked me for my take on it, so anyone interested can find
it here:

I don't see what's so bad about polygamy actually. Look, it's not my
cup of tea and I couldn't afford it anyway. It's alien to western
sensibilities, but that doesn't make it a bad thing.

Did anyone say it was a bad thing?

There was the "nutty idea" comment.

And you raised the issue with your headline. Of course you haven't
explicitly condemned the practice (you haven't defended it or, in the
linked article, commented on it all), but clearly you think this is a
significant attribute of Zuma's.

There were far more important issues in this election than polygamy.
Or should have been.

There was the "nutty idea" comment.
But it didn't say which idea was nutty.

It was actually by way of satirical comment on a whole series of posts in
various newsgroups that say things like "53% say next president will be
republican" which makes me wonder whether 47% think the next president will be
monarchist. Now THERE'S a nutty idea, if ever there was one.

Quite, and that is why I did not mention it in the blog post I referred to.

But the current fashion, in many newsgroups, seems to be to put irrelevant and
incidental (and often erroneous) characteristics of presidents in the subject
line, together with the percentage of people who believe that they are true
and/or important. Where the presidents are named (they often aren't) their
names are often misspelt too.

Mind you, I havent said that I think either republicanism or monarchism is
good or bad either.
