Background:
The ANC used their numbers to force through a 'secrecy' bill which
introduces 'prison sentences of up to 25 years for publishing state
secrets and up to 15 years for revealing information about the
operations of the intelligence community'.
It also ditches the 'public interest' defence for whistleblowers.
So for example, if anyone revealed that President Zuma was bribed for
weapons purchases, they could face a 25 year prison sentence.
"Public Protector Thuli Madonsela wrote to the Speaker that the bill
would impact on her work because she relies heavily on information from
whistleblowers and the media".
